Annagasse, Vienna

Annagasse is one of the oldest streets in Vienna, dating back to the 13th Century.

Nestled in the heart of the historic centre of Vienna, Annagasse is one of the oldest streets in the city. It dates back to the 13th Century when it was still called Pippingerstraße.

During the centuries that followed St Anne’s Church was built in gothic style. The church was transformed, however, by the Jesuits, who restructured it to be more baroque in 1626.

The Jesuit Fathers also built St. Annahof, a huge monastery, right next to St Anne’s. This building was transformed and readapted for various alternative functions: a fine arts academy, a theatre, a restaurant, and even a club, then a fast food restaurant.

Today, Annagasse maintains its enchanting baroque atmosphere. Despite its many restructurings and reconstructions, in part necessary because of the impact of the war, the street has never lost that old-fashioned elegance which typifies old Vienna.

The marvellous decorations on ‘The Blue Carp’ House (zum blauen karpf) and the famous Vienna Music Rooms that can be found right on the corner between Annagasse and Seilerstätte.

The street is also very well-known for its many bookshops, boutiques and fashion houses.
