Portobello Market, London

One of London's best markets, piled high with antiques, food and fashion.

Portobello Market is a vibrant and world-famous antiques market in the Notting Hill area of London. It was named in honour of General Edward Vernon, who captured the town Puerto Bello in the Caribbean in 1939, during Britain's war with the Spanish empire.

The Market dates back to the 1860s, when the area became a popular place to live, encouraging foodmongers, peddlers of bric-a-brac and street performers to set up shop. Towards the close of the Second World War, 'Rag and Bone' men began to sell second-hand household goods and antiques. The mile-long Portobello street market is divided into three sections: antiques, food and fashion.

The antiques section, for which it is most famous, includes furniture, jewellery and second-hand books. But the market is also a great spot for vintage clothes and acessories. The main market day is Saturday for the antiques fair, although fruit and vegetable stalls operate throughout the week. Regarded by some as London's best market, Portobello attracts a huge number of Londoners and tourists every year.
