El Grec, Theatre Festival, Barcelona: Every July

Don't miss out on El Grec, one of the best summer theatre festivals in the world!

The Grec theatre festival is held in Barcelona during the month of July. Inaugurated in 1976, in its first years the festival took place at the Grec Theatre, built in 1929 by Forestier, Reventós and Rubió i Tudurí in the Montjuic mountain, following the traditional Greek model. Due to the festival’s escalating popularity, many other venues have joined the Grec, including the Teatre Lliure, the Biblioteca de Catalunya and the Antic Hospital de la Santa Creu; even the Montjuic Castle is adapted into a performance stage every July.

The festival programme is a performance stravaganza that fills the city with music, dancing and theatre. Special events are scheduled all over Barcelona, ranging from outdoor dramas to street art to classical ballet, many of them with international artist. It has become one of the most important cultural festivals in Europe and is worldwide famous for hosting innovative proposals such as Physical Theatre or Quantum Opera. Its scenarios have seen, over the years, performers like Bobby McFerrin, La Fura dels Baus, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Silvie Guillem, as well as renowned directors such as Romeo Castellucci, Amos Gitai or Calixto Bieto.
