TEATRO MASSIMO, PALERMO: Season 2010

Visit the largest opera house in Italy and third largest European theatre! In the mid 19th century a competition was launched to find the best design proposal for building a new, and badly needed, theatre in the island's capital. From the 35 participants who applied, including a good proportion of international applications, the local architect G.B.Basile was chosen as the winner. But unfortunately he died in 1891 before much of the work had been completed. The Teatro Massimo finally opened in 1897 and the very first show to be put on there was Verdi's opera 'Falstaff'. In typical Italian fashion, the theatre has been closed for a good part of the twentieth century because of some odd Southern ruling, but it re-opened in 1997 with a massive season of shows and celebrations.
Curiosity: it is in Teatro Massimo that the finale of Godfather III was filmed.
