VENICE: CANALETTO AND HIS RIVALS, THE NATIONAL GALLERY: 13 October 2010-16 January 2011 |
The first of its kind to be organised in the UK, 'Venice: Canaletto and his Rivals' promises an outstanding survey of 18th century views of the city.
The exhibition will pivot on the work of the great master of the genre, Canaletto. His meticulously detailed painting is remarkable for its unique artistic style and truth to the Venetian cityscape. Many of Canaletto's most accomplished works will be included, such as 'The Riva degli Schiavoni, looking West' and 'The Stonemason's Yard'. Such a fine assembly has not been seen since the much-celebrated exhibition of his work in Venice in 1967.
In each room, major works by Canaletto will be juxtaposed with those of his rivals and associates, leaving the viewer to compare the diversity of approaches. Of the approximately 55 major loans from public and private collections across Europe and North America, Canaletto's peers on display will range from his most predominant competitors to less renowned figures often driven by the British Grand Tour. The better-known views on display will include those of Luca Carlevarijs, Gaspar van Witell, Michele Marieschi, Bernardo Bellotto, and Francesco Guardi. |
