Tate Britain, London

Located close to Whitehall and Westminster in the residential area of Pimlico, the Tate Gallery exhibits a profusion of post-1500 British art.

It first opened in 1897 and, although it has been extended since then, it hasn't changed much in the intervening years. It has been flooded by the Thames and was even bombed in WWII with damage still visible on the Atterbury Street wall. Until 2000, it housed both British and international modern collections, but since the opening of the Tate Modern, it has only housed British work.

There is a boat that runs between the two Tates, making for a practical and picturesque trip. Many famous British artists are shown on the walls of the Tate, making it the best place to get a feel of how British art has changed over the last 500 years. Examples stretch from the subtle portraits of Sir Joshua Reynolds to the tortured faces of Francis Bacon, from the gentle pastoral scenes of John Constable through to William Turner's abstract landscapes to Tracey Emin's sketchy drawings.

The gallery also holds temporary exhibitions featuring the works of British or international art throughout the year.
