Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, the seat of the Pope in Rome and of Christianity in the world!

Founded by Pope Melchiade in the 4th century, the Basilica di San Giovanni is the oldest of four major Papal basilicas and has a long and troublesome history. Originally dedicated to Christ the Savior, the basilica was later named in honour of John the Baptist and John the Evangelist (both called San Giovanni in Italian).

What the Vandals didn’t destroy of the original building in the 5th century, the earthquake of 896 and two consecutive fires did. Yet the masterwork of Vassalletto, Chiostro, has survived and is still on display for visitors. It is a square-shaped monument surrounded by a fascinating portico with arches and columns decorated with exquisite mosaics. Among other treasures of particular value, you can find the cosmatesque tomb of Cardinal Casati. Its style of geometric decorative inlay is typical of the architecture of Medieval Italy and especially Rome. Also take a glimpse at the elegant bronze shutters of Pietro and Uberto da Piacenza (12th century) and a splendid fresco made by .

The Basilica di San Giovanni ranks above all other churches of the Roman Catholic Church, even including St. Peter's Basilica. It is a must-visit place in one of the most-visited cities in the world of travelling!
