Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna

In 1770 the 14-year-old Mozart travelled with his father to Bologna to undertake the coveted membership exam of the Accademia Filarmonica, which had been founded in 1666 by the nobleman Vincenzo Mari Carrati in his family home.

Rumour has it that Mozart took just half an hour to complete the exam (which took most applicants several hours), and was subsequently taught at the Accademia by the composer Giovanni Battista Martini. Today you can visit the very room Mozart is supposed to have sat the exam in, as the Accademia is still active as an institution of musical education and training.
