The Antoni Tàpies Foundation puts on display the works of one of the most influential and forward thinking Catalan artists of modern times.

The Antoni Tàpies Foundation puts on display the works of one of the most influential and forward thinking Catalan artists of modern times. Thanks to generous donations by the artist and his wife, the museum hosts one of the most complete collections of Tàpies's works available, from the 1940s onwards. Through the museum's impressive collection, you can follow the progression of Tàpies's work from his early primitive drawings and paintings, to his famous "matter" series, featuring various deconstructed materials (dirt, dust particles, plant matter) reformed into artwork, to his later works influenced by the political unrest in Catalonia in the 1960s and 70s and certain Buddhist philosophies on the nature of suffering. Throughout his life (1923-2012), Tàpies was known for using experimental techniques and materials as well as exploring sensitive subject matters, such as the grotesque nature of the human body.

Tàpies was also a big proponent for the study and sponsorship of art on a local and international level. As a result, the museum also serves as a cultural events centre, hosting exhibitions of modern artists, lectures and film screenings, thereby fulfilling the artist's wish to promote cultural learning in the community and foster the creation of new and innovative artwork.
