CaixaForum, Museum, Barcelona: All Year

A masterpiece of modernist industrial architecture, recovered for the people of Barcelona, CaixaForum hosts a wide array of exhibitions, talks, forums, viewings and performances that will continually delight, entertain and inform viewers from any audience.

Standing proud on the fringes of Montjuïc, this old factory, built between 1909 and 1912, was designed by the Catalan architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch for the industrial textiles company Casimir Casaramona. Built from traditional materials -brick and wrought iron- the building is a beautiful example of Modernist architecture that heeds to utilitarian criteria without ever neglecting the importance of the esthetical appearance.

After standing idle for many years, it was acquired by “la Caixa” Foundation in 1963, bestowed with a new social function and is now the headquarters of the Barcelona “CaixaForum”. The aim of restoring the building was to give the infrastructure a new cultural and social function without detracting from the original pioneering and modernist spirit of the factory. Its restoration has converted it into one of the most happening cultural spaces in the city. It boasts five exhibition rooms, a large auditorium and multi-purpose classrooms in which they organise a wide selection of art exhibitions, concerts, film showings, installations, debates and conferences, literature and philosophy sessions, performing arts shows, educational programmes and much more. Since its opening in 2002, CaixaForum in Barcelona has added depth and value to the community around it in terms of art and cultural knowledge. An open forum for artists and institutions of all genres to display their work to the community, the centre is also a venue for learning and expanding cultural knowledge for visitors.

Proclaimed as a Historical Monument of National Interest in 1976, this piece of cultural heritage has become a piece of art in itself, that unites past with present and tradition with modernity.
