The Fundación MAPFRE is a new venture in Barcelona, expanding on pre-existing MAPRE exhibition spaces in Madrid. Since it opened in October of 2015, the foundation has focused on the works of Catalan artists, hoping to expand community interest and awareness of regional art and culture in Barcelona. Its permanent exhibitions primarily feature late 19th and early 20th century visual arts, including photography, painting, and graphic art, although these collections are still growing. Based on the success of the MAPFRE foundation's earlier cultural ventures in Madrid, it will be exciting to see the impact that the exhibition space in Barcelona will have on the community.

The building which houses the MAPFRE foundation dates to the same period as its art exhibitions, originally constructed in 1904 by architect Eric Sagnier. The building was intended to be a residential space, housing the Garriga Nogués family, who it is named after. A modern edifice which retains many of its interesting architectural details, such as the intricate molding details on the top floor and the iron-wrought balconies, it is currently shared by the MAPFRE foundation's exhibition space on the bottom floor and a hotel on the top levels.
