Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin

A memorial site for the best known crossing-point between East and West Germany during the Cold War.

The Berlin Wall divided East from West Germany between 1961 and 1989. This was the most famous crossing-point between the two.

It was the site of many escape attempts from East Berlin and has been featured in multiple films, including Octopussy (1983) in which James Bond made his escape.

Today, it is a memorial site and a replica of the original guardhouse has been built in the middle of the street.

Nearby, you can visit the Checkpoint Charlie Museum and learn about the history of the Cold War and the various escape attempts.
