Built by Ludwig Hoffmann between 1909 and 1930, the Pergamon Museum was adapted from the plans drawn up by Alfred Messel. Messel died before the beginning of the construction work but the Pergamon Museum lives on in his memory as one of the most recent museums to be built on Museum Island . Renowned for its monumental reconstructions, it is divided into three separate departments.
