Piazza Maggiore is a hub of Bologna’s social life, a place where everyone meets and everything happens.
Apart from big-city-life events like concerts and street exhibitions, the central square offers plenty of stunning architecture and is home to the Basilica di San Petronio, the Town Hall, and the famous fountain of Neptune.
The Neptune fountain dominates the square and is a historical meeting place for the Bolognesi. This 16th-century work by Flemish sculptor Giambologna impresses with its detail as one sees Neptune’s trident clasped firmly in his left hand and a fish squirming beneath his foot. Beautifully lit at night, Neptune projects a magnificent shadow on the wall of Palazzo Comunale.
Piazza Maggiore is a great place for breathing in the city atmosphere and people-watching. Sit at one of the outdoor cafés or on the steps of the church of San Petronio, relax and listen to the beat of Bologna’s heart.
