Rudas Thermal Baths, Budapest

Budapest is renowned for its baths, built on natural hot springs in several parts of the city. Rudas is one of the oldest, and the best.

No stay in Budapest would be complete without a visit to a thermal bath. These natural springs are one of the city’s major attractions. Rudas has an unusually classy character and isn’t generally as packed as the more famous baths elsewhere in Budapest.

Established as early as the 16th century, Rudas retains the character of the Ottoman occupation of Hungary at that time: the architecture is graceful, the atmosphere peaceful and unhurried.

The main activity here is the bathing itself, but you should also try out one of the “cure waters”: waters from three local distinct sources which are said to have health benefits. These are Hungária, Attila and Juventus (not the team).

The so-called Wellness Department includes the Juventus pool, immersion pool, a rooftop pool and two hot water pools. The bar and restaurant are strong, with reasonable prices, and you’re even allowed to go in your swimming gear (plus a towel).

Original Ottoman features include an octagonal pool, the four corner pools each with their own temperature, and the characteristic Turkish dome.
