Citadella, Budapest

Atop Gellért Hill is a fortress, built for surveillance by the old Austrian Empire. Today, the Citadella offers visitors panoramic views of Budapest.

Gellért Hill, one of Budapest’s best viewing points, is known for its baths and hotels. But its most impressive feature is the Citadella. Built after a failed uprising in 1848, this castle was used by the ruling Austrian Empire to keep Hungarians under control. It’s pretty imposing, with a distinctive U-shaped structure covering the whole summit.

The Austrians may have gone, but the Citadella is now open to visitors who want to sample some history and enjoy its panorama of the city. You can see everything here from the Danube, the Parliament building, the docks with tourist boats, and right across the Pest district. Next to the fortress is the Liberation Monument, commemorating those Hungarians who died trying to throw off the Austrian yoke. Behind it is a children’s playpark, making this a good trip even for families.

The Citadella itself isn’t going to win any architectural awards. It was built for purpose, not beauty. You can’t go in at the moment.

You can climb the Hill on foot, if you’re feeling fit. Benches are placed at regular intervals up the steps, but bear in mind that there’s not much shade on a sunny day. Alternatively, a hop-on, hop-off bus will take you right to the top. You can also drive. Food options are limited and pricey, so it’s probably better to bring your own.
