Vajdahunyad Castle, Budapest

Originally a temporary monument to Hungarian history, Vajdahunyad Castle remains in place. It’s a wonderfully bizarre mishmash of architectural styles.

The 19th century was a big one for Hungary, seeing the country’s 1,000-year anniversary. One of the big celebratory buildings put up for this anniversary was Vajdahunyad Castle.

The castle is a deliberate mishmash of architectural styles which appeared over the course of Hungarian history: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. This gives it a unique fairytale-like appearance, right in the middle of City Park, Budapest’s biggest green space.

The original Vajdahunyad Castle was made of wood and cardboard, unsurprisingly collapsing under its own weight before too long. The current structure was put up for good in its place.

The Hungarian Agricultural Museum is based here, showcasing Hungary’s place as a rich farming nation. Hungarian wine is perhaps the country’s most famous export, but the museum also explores the history of animal farming in the area, as well as forestry. A weird touch comes with the room full of deer antlers, adding a slightly uncanny note to this already bizarre building.

It’s well worth a visit if you’re already in City Park, with its various other attractions.
