Cafe Ruszwurm Cukrászda, Budapest

Hungarian pastries are a force to be reckoned with. Café Ruszwurm is one of the oldest bakeries in Budapest, so is an ideal pit stop for the foodie tourist.

When you think of countries with delicious food, Hungary probably isn’t high up your list. But great eating is one of the country’s best kept secrets. This is especially true of Budapest, which abounds with quirky eateries. Café Ruszwurm is one of these.

Ruszwurm first opened in 1827, making it one of the longest established bakeries in the capital. It’s renowned locally for its pastries, a little-known Hungarian specialty. For generations the Szamos family have been baking up these treats for locals and tourists alike, to massive commercial success.

Some flaky Hungarian highlights include Kifli, a dense croissant-like bread, and the formidable Flódni, the pastry equivalent of a club sandwich. In-house specialities include the lime-green Szamos cake and Ruszwurm cream pastry. All perfect with a coffee.

Amateur bakers should have a look at the café’s website, which features recipes for the cakes on offer. Strangely, no one has copied the Ruszwurm cream pastry so far, even though the recipe is an open secret.

The café itself is quaint and cosy, with original 1840s features. More seating is available outside in the warmer months. Just be aware that the café is extremely popular, so plan your visit for the quieter hours of the day.
