As a tourist, it’s very easy to spend your day wandering between exhibits, statues and restaurants. A good piece of entertainment, preferably low-effort, can be hard to find. This is where the Budapest Operetta Theatre comes in.

Even if the idea of an opera fills you with dread, you may well enjoy an operetta. Not only is an operetta shorter than an opera, its subject matter is also less serious. Budapest’s theatre specialises in the operettas written in Vienna since 1898, generally considered the best. Some have described the productions here as “campy”, which goes to show that the theatre is low on pretentiousness.

Past productions include Maya, Rebecca Mistress of Manderley, The Gypsy Princess, and the fantastically titled Adventures of the Flying Grandma.
