Liszt Ferenc Square, Budapest

Lined with great eateries, Liszt Ferenc Square is an inviting leafy hideout in the centre of Budapest. It’s also near great theatres and even the Academy of Music.

In contrast with the starker Kossuth and Liberty Squares, Liszt Ferenc is filled with trees and benches. This makes it a popular spot to relax in the summer months, not just for tourists but also locals.

Lots of cafés and restaurants face the Square, and nearby you’ll find Pest’s Broadway, where some of Budapest’s biggest theatres are, as well as yet more restaurants and cafés. It’s perfect place for classy visitors get some fresh air and quiet between seeing a play and going to dinner. You’ll also find the Hungarian House of Photography on Broadway, one of the most exciting galleries of its kind in Europe.

The nearby Academy of Music is a real hidden treasure, and surely ranks among the most beautiful concert halls in Europe. It also contains a prestigious conservatory for Hungary’s musicians-in-training.

The Square is named after Franz Liszt (his Hungarian name is Liszt Ferenc), the great Hungarian composer. He has a statue here, as you’d expect, although it’s sometimes surrounded by restaurant tables. Probably not the image he was going for.

Oktogon, one of Budapest’s busiest junctions, is also within spitting distance. The Square is surprisingly tranquil considering, but also has great transport links as a result.
