La boulangerie de la Martinière, Lyon

If you grab a delicious sweet pastry or a fresh sandwich from La boulangerie de la Martinière, then why not sit and enjoy it in the nearby garden at the Musée des Beaux-Arts.

It’s difficult to avoid the large chain bakeries in the city centre, such as Paul and Chez Jules, but we’ll let you into a well kept secret: just a few minutes away from Hôtel de Ville and off Place des Terreaux, is an artisan boulangerie, La boulangerie de la Martinière. They have all the pièces de résistance such as fluffy madeleines (€0.80), crisp baguettes (€0.90), special lyonnais tarte aux pralines (€2.20) and sweet brioches (€1.10). They also do a selection of freshly made sandwiches (starting from €3) and there is a handy meal deal option where you can get a sandwich and drink for €4.50, or add on a dessert as well for an extra €2. Not surprisingly there’s always a line coming out the door at lunchtime but it gives you time to fathom out what you’re going to buy. Unfortunately there is no available seating but grab your sandwich or pastry to go and sit in beautiful garden at the Musée des Beaux-Arts (it’s free to visit without buying a ticket to museum!)
