ARKEN Museum of Modern Art in Ishøj, south of Copenhagen

Danish architect Søren Robert Lund designed the museum as if a huge maritime building had just sailed into the dunes on the coast south of Copenhagen.

Just 20km from Copenhagen, Arken Museum of Modern Art (opened in 1996) covers a total of 9,200 square metres and is organised around the imposing 150m-long main room. The architecture alone is worth stopping to see, but the exhibitions inside are excellent quality.

The museum focuses on modern and highly experimental pieces of Danish and Scandinavian, and now international art. Every year an exhibition showcases the museum's most recent acquisitions in the permanent collection and there are several temporary exhibitions that are guaranteed to attract an international audience.

There's also a great café which looks over Køge Bay onto the tempting sandy beaches close by.
