It’s almost impossible to believe that the castle was almost totally destroyed (along with large swathes of the rest of the city) by the Germans in 1944; Dating back to the 14th century it had already been destroyed in the 17th century before returning to its former magnificence in the second half of the 18th century. In 1984 the reconstruction of the castle was complete. Though few of the original furniture and works of art are still there, the fine interiors have been beautifully restored and there is an amazing art gallery with many fine pieces.
