Bologna’s most recognizable architectural site are, of course, the Two Towers (Torri degli Asinelli e Garisenda). Casting a magnificent shadow over the crowded avenue of Ugo Bassi, they dominate the city skyline and impress a fellow traveller just like they did nine centuries ago.

In the late 12th century medieval Bologna sported at least one hundred towers that were later ravaged by fires, lightnings and wars. These two are the lucky survivors of the city’s turbulent past.

The Asinelli and Garisenda towers are strategically positioned on the old Roman road (Aemilian way) and have always warned off unwelcomed guests of the city. Unlike most buildings, they were made in masonry work, a matter of security but also prestige. The imposing height of the towers spoke for the social status of the noble families that owned them. Today they stand right in the middle of Porta Ravegnana square and help tourists as well as the Bolognesi to orient themselves around the city.

Asinelli tower offers an aesthetic experience not to miss. The spiral staircase takes you right to the top of the tower, revealing a breathtaking panoramic view on the medieval city. Climbing 498 steps is well worth it!

The observation deck feels much higher than it looks from the ground. Indeed, wide avenues are reduced to thin ribbons, radiating away from the base of the tower, and magnificent churches - to pointy red roofs, dotting the skyline. The view of Bologna’s main cathedral in the distance - Basilica of San Luca - is also quite impressive.
