The National Gallery’s exhibition on Thomas Cole presents the American landscape artist as a major global figure of the 19th Century. Born in Britain but based in America, Cole’s artistic style was influenced by his background and his trips to Europe. For example, The Oxbow is known as a masterpiece of American landscape painting, but it wouldn’t look out of place in a European collection.
The impact of the artist’s journeys to England and Italy are made clear by the National Gallery’s decision to display European artists’ work alongside his. You’ll be able to compare Cole’s work to his contemporaries, such as Turner and Constable.
Much of Cole’s work is rarely seen outside of the States and this is the first time certain pieces have ever been displayed in the UK, one being the renowned painting cycle, The Course of Empire.
