Beacon of Hope, Belfast

This 2007 sculpture was designed by Andy Scott and creates a public space for thanksgiving down by the River Lagan.

Inspired by Thanksgiving Square in Dallas, Texas, the Beacon of Hope sculpture sits by the River Lagan and is 15 metres tall. Stainless steel and cast bronze were used to make this sculpture of a woman who holds a “ring of thanksgiving” (a motif also used in the Texas public square). She stands on top of a bronze globe showing cities where various Belfast citizens have migrated.

It was designed by Scottish sculptor Andy Scott and made by P.F Copeland of Newtownabbey in 2007. Though its official name is the “Beacon of Hope”, locals have given it various nicknames, including “Nuala with the Hula”, “Thing with the Ring” or the “Angel of Thanksgiving”.
