Museum of the Works of Santa Croce, Florence: All Year

Come to the Museum of the Works of Santa Croce to see profound artwork!

Come to the Museum of the Works of Santa Croce to see profound artwork!  Located next to the Basilica of Santa Croce, this Gothic style structure contains frescoes, statues, and much more!

One of the highlights here is the Crucifix by Cimabue.  This piece is tempera on wood shaped in a cross.  However, due to a flood in 1966, its original quality is in poor condition but thanks to restorations, the piece is still intriguing and interesting!  It has a historical importance that is often depicted in other works of art made by Michelangelo, Velasquez, and Caravaggio.

Donatello’s gilded bronze statue of St. Louis of Toulouse is a must see piece here!  Commissioned by the Guelph party for a tabernacle, Donatello created this beauty between 1423 and 1425.  St. Louis of Toulouse was chosen because it was an obedient figure to the pope.  When the Guelph family sold the tabernacle, the piece was moved to the Museum of the Opera of Santa Croce.

The Museum of the Works of Santa Croce houses many works of art by talented artists.  Spending a couple of hours here admiring the beautiful work is definitely worth it!
