The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, also known as il Duomo, is the dominating structure of Florence.  This Gothic style cathedral with the Renaissance dome is the highlight of the city.

The cathedral was built starting in 13th century by Arnolfo di Cambio and finished in 15th century when Filippo Brunelleschi added the dome.

The interior of the cathedral is adorned with preserved mosaics and frescoes.  A prominent piece of art is the Last Supper by Giorgio Vasari.  There is also a clock above the entrance designed by Paolo Uccello in 1443 which to this day still works.

There is no admission fee to enter the cathedral!  Visitors can tour the cathedral on their own or with a guided tour.  Don’t forget to climb to the top of Brunelleschi’s dome.  The climb will definitely be worth it because the panoramic view of the city and countryside is breathtaking!
