Piazza della Repubblica is a large square in the center of Florence as an effort to redevelop the historical center. After Italy’s unification, the city of Florence decided to modernize and rebuild the historic center.
Beginning in 1885, many buildings were knocked down. However, many citizens strongly felt that this was not right. An international campaign was constructed to stop the destruction of historical and important buildings. As well, the city began to run out of money and the project ended.
Piazza della Repubblica was already built when they still had funds. Today the square is a popular location for local Florentines and tourists. It is surrounded by ancient buildings and narrow alleyways off to the side. An important structure here is the imposing arch, the Arcone. Although it was a part of the modernization plan, it has an inscription recognizing the importance of the historic city.
Piazza della Repubblica is a highlight in Florence due to the many popular restaurants and cafes in the square.
