Antibes Cathedral, Provence

This grand 18th-century cathedral stands on the site of a Roman temple dedicated to Diana and Minerva, the remains of which can be seen in the chapel. It is said that Saint Paul stopped here on his way to Spain in 63 AD.

The current cathedral was built in 1746, after the town was bombed during the Austrian succession wars (1740-48). It is built predominantly in the Italian Baroque style, with Renaissance and Modern additions reflecting its transformation over the centuries. The sculpted tympanum over the entrance was made in 1710 by Joseph Dolle, a local sculptor, and it shows Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian, protectors of Antibes.

Behind its grandiose façade, the cathedral has many works of religious art. The most renowned is the altarpiece of Our Lady of the Rosary in the transept chapel, which was painted in 1515 by the Niçois artist, Louis Brea.
