It was built in 1557 by order of Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy, to reinforce the defense line following the Siege of Nice in 1543. Today it is one of the best lookouts on the French Riviera, and remains almost perfectly preserved.
Perched on its eponymous hill, the Mont Alban Fort was one of the region’s major military defenses. Unsurprisingly, because of its strategic location, the views from the fort are some of the best in the area, looking out over the French Riviera coastline all the way to the Italian border. Its original 16th-century structure is unaltered, making it one of the few remaining testimonies of military architecture in France.
