Notre-Dame de Nice, Provence

The largest church in Nice and the first modern religious building, the Basilica of Notre-Dame was inspired by the cathedral in Angers. Decorated with stained glass windows dating from the 19th century, the building has two square towers and a sumptuous rose window representing scenes of the Assumption.

The Basilica of Notre Dame in Nice is a basilica located on Avenue Jean-Médecin in the city centre. It was built between 1864 and 1868 according to the plans of the French architect Louis Lenormand. It is the largest church in Nice. It is inspired by the cathedral of Angers.

The basilica has two square towers of twenty-five metres in height, surmounted on either side by a large rose window representing scenes from the mystery of the Assumption. Its construction was part of the authorities' desire to Frenchify the town after the annexation of the county of Nice to France. The Gothic style buildings were indeed supposed to be characteristic of a French style.
