Basilique Saint-Pierre d'Avignon, Provence

Collegiate church built between the 14th and early 16th centuries, its characteristic Provencal showy gothic facade and its richly carved solid walnut doors are a must-see when discovering old Avignon.

Located in the city centre, a stone's throw from the Palais des Papes, the Place Saint Pierre, paved with pebbles, is the square in front of the parish church of the same name.

This charming square, sheltered from view and traffic, is very popular with tourists and the people of Avignon.

Saint-Pierre was rebuilt in 1385, thanks to donations from Cardinal Pierre de Près. Its construction, which remained unfinished, was resumed in the 15th century when side chapels were added and the nave was extended by two bays.

You can admire the woodwork, the altarpiece, the pulpit, and the paintings, including the "Adoration of the Shepherds" by Simon de Chalons. Its flamboyant Provençal Gothic façade is the most embellished of all the churches in Avignon and its doors alone are worth a look.
