Saint-Omer Cathedral, Caloterie

In the heart of a quiet quarter of Saint-Omer, this former Roman Catholic cathedral and minor basilica is a perfectly preserved example of gothic architecture.

What was originally the site of a modest 7th-century chapel is now a remarkable embodiment of the Gothic style that litters the northern provinces of France. Construction of the cathedral as it stands today began in the 13th-century, although the building owes much of its popularity to its richness of furniture and art. A unique astrological clock dating back to 1558 is said to be one of the oldest of its nature in France.
