The vast, grand old Gare D'Orsay, a Beaux-Arts railway station, now the Musée d'Orsay, is as spectacular as the greatest collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist works in the world, which is on display here.
The light-filled central hall has been used for various film sets, as well as a mailing centre in the Second World War. The museum was conceived to fill in the gap between the collection of art in the Louvre, and of that in the Museum of Modern Art in the Pompidou Centre.
It now holds 43 works of Degas, 46 of Camille Pissarro, 56 Cézannes and 86 by Monet, as well as hordes of other beautiful pieces. Arranged by movement and artist, the layout gives you a perspective of modern art and artists but also allows you to happily ignore the signage and absorb the beauty.
