Hartsheath House, Flintshire, Wales

This elaborate Victorian building was commissioned by the Welsh Iron and Coal Mining Company but the works caused them to go bust. The Jones family, who bought the house from the company, lives there now.

The Lloyd family built the first house on Hartsheath estate in 1702. This house was then remodelled in the late 18th century and sold to Colonel Wardell. However the house was in bad condition by 1819 and the Welsh Iron and Coal Mining Company bought  the property and commissioned Charles Mathews to design the house for their director. Unfortunately, the money spent on the house bankrupted them  and the Jones family stepped in to buy the house, where they still live today.

The house’s elegant interior includes a black marble fireplace in the entrance hall, which has doors from the early 19th century.  In the drawing room you’ll see a trompe l'oeil painting with pineapple motifs.  The house also has Welsh watercolours and works by Isidor Kaufmann, who is sometimes known as the “Jewish Holbein”. Outside, there are terraced and informal gardens, plus a 19th-century kitchen garden with old fruit trees.
