Quex House and Park, Kent, England

The Powell-Cotton Museum with  over 500 cultural artefacts, stuffed and mounted animals, and mementoes of the family's expeditions and travels is as fascinating as it is bizarre. Throw in the  beautiful house heaving with other treasures and 15 acres of gardens to get a few fascinating hours of real distraction.

This grade II listed house,  built in 1803 by architect Thomas Hardwick is the former home of the Powell-Cotton family. Major Percy Horace Gordon Powell-Cotton (1866-1940), explorer, big game hunter, naturalist and anthropologist, founded the Quex Museum which is at the side of the house.  His travels included an 'around the world' trip and numerous overseas collecting expeditions to Asia, Africa and India.  Over the years 1885 to 1939 Major Percy Powell-Cotton and his family amassed an extraordinary collection  from mammals to carvings. The house itself is also bursting at the seams with curiosities gathered from all over the globe.

The end result of Powell-Cotton's explorations is a remarkable collection of over 500 cultural artefacts, stuffed and mounted animals, and mementoes of his travels. Among the items on show is an impressive collection of Chinese Ching dynasty Imperial porcelain.

The gardens cover over 15 acres and include a Victorian walled garden, open lawns, exotic trees and  woodland walks. Don’t miss the Waterloo Tower  built for John Powell Powell  to house his collection of 12 bells and which became the family mausoleum.
