Restoration House, Medway, Kent, England

This Elizabethan house was so named because Charles II stayed here on the eve of his restoration in May 1660 as it was the only crossing of the Medway between Dover and London.

It was also used as  Miss Haversham's house in Great Expectations.

The house is  the amalgamation of two medieval buildings which were combined in the late 16th or early 17th Century to create a mansion house just outside the south east corner of the city wall in Rochester.

It includes a  wonderful collection of English furniture and paintings, including several Gainsboroughs and Reynolds and rare Constable portraits as well as a collection of English pottery and treen.

The walled garden is unusually large being almost one acre.

"There is no finer pre Civil War town house in England than this" claims Simon Jenkins from  The Times).
