This is a modern and innovative museum covering 6500 m², built on an archeological site. One of the purposes of this large permanent exhibition is to create a direct link between the city, the museum and the archeological site. Musée d'histoire de Marseille was opened in 1983 after the major archeological finds in 1967 on the site of what is now a supermarket, Centre de la Bourse and the museum itself which are joined into one complex.

Discover the long history of Marseille which is presented in 13 series: from Cosquer cave to the  Marseille of today. The museum exhibits nearly 4,000 artworks and historical items. There are 12 green boxes along the tour which propose an educational game for children and the museum provides free audio guides in French, English and Italian.
