Musée Regards de Provence, Marseille

This museum, which is next to Cathedrale de la Major (Marseille cathedral) is dedicated to Provençal and Mediterranean art.

The Musée Regards de Provence was designed by the architect Fernand Pouillon in 1948. The building was originally used to disinfect and vaccinate the newcomers of Marseille in the hope of fighting epidemics in the city. The site is now listed as Heritage building.

In 2013, when Marseille was nominated the European capital of culture, the building was turned into a museum which now exhibits a collection of paintings, drawings, photographs and  sculptures, all related to Marseille, Provence and the Mediterranean. Head over to check out the works from the 18th century to the present day. The museum also has a permanent multimedia documentary Memories of the Sanitary Station. You can also find a lovely cafe on the roof and a gift shop selling books on Provençal art.
