Hôtel de Ville, Lyon

Lyon's town hall is an historic and remarkable monument, first built between 1646 and 1672.

In the heart of Lyon, opposite the Opéra and overlooking the Place des Terreaux, is Lyon’s town hall. This historic and remarkable monument was first built between 1646 and 1672, designed by the city architect, Simon Maupin. The construction was officially launched in honour of King Louis XIV on his birthday. The meticulously detailed building is arranged around two courtyards, (one of which is elevated); four corner pavilions and a belltower. Parts of the building have been destroyed after major fires broke out, once, shortly after construction finished in 1674 and again in 1803. Both times the building was repaired and contemporary architectural changes were made. During the French Revolution the building was again damaged and turned into a court of justice.

Today the Hôtel de Ville is used for city council meetings and is listed as an historic building, which is closely associated with the city of Lyon. To find out more about its history and construction, it’s worth a visit to the Musée Gadagne.
