Abbaye Saint Martin d'Ainay, Lyon

This abbey is the only surviving 11th century Romanesque church in Lyon.

This abbey, minutes away from Bellecour and the Musée des tissus et des arts décoratifs, is the only 11th century Romanesque (a popular style of architecture during medieval Europe) church which has survived in Lyon. According to existing archives, it dates back to the end of 11th century when it was built on the site of a 9th century Carolingian church. During the 13th century the abbey flourished, attracting more monks and acquiring land enabling a cult of the Martyrs of Lyon to settle here. It was greatly damaged during the wars of religion in the 16th century, but was saved from harm during the Revolution as it was used as a hayloft for several years. At the start of the 19th century it was in such bad condition that it was nearly pulled down. It was originally built, based on the plans for a basilica which becomes obvious when you look at some of the architectural features, such as the four Roman columns from the altar of Augustus and Rome. The mosaics, sculptures and paintings inside are a mixture of Romanesque and 19th century styles.
