Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol, Barcelona

Square in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, next to the Church of Santa Maria del Pi

Yet another small square in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. In the centre, a bronze statue of the Catalan author Angel Guimerà sits contemplating the 14th-century Gothic facade of the Santa Maria del Pi church. A plaque on the wall of the adjoining church Santa Maria del Pi tells the quirky story of builder José Mestres who plummeted from the top of church when he was working on it, but miraculously survived without any serious injuries, despite his considerable weight.

This square was once the graveyard for the adjoining church Santa Maria del Pi, but despite protests from the clergy, it was paved over in the 17th century. It was named after the Priest Josep Oriol who was the church’s beneficiary at that time and dedicated his life to looking after the sick. Nowadays people sit outside cafes drinking coffee as local artists try to sell their paintings, giving the square a bohemian feel.
