Musée des Arts décoratifs et du Design, Bordeaux: All year

Beauty and utility is the theme of the collection at the Musée des Arts décoratifs et du Design (MADD). This museum which is in a beautiful townhouse in the Hôtel Lalande, is dedicated to the decorative arts.

The MADD collection is made up of 18th and 19th-century paintings, engravings, sculptures, furniture, ceramics, glassware...items that could be functional but are exquisitely decorative. Since the museum is in a townhouse, the collection recreates the original aristocratic atmosphere. The building was designed by the Bordeaux architect Etienne Laclotte in 1779 and was intended to be a residence for the parliament member Pierre de Raymond de Lalande. It still retains its original woodwork, marble fireplaces, and traces of its original decor, which are perfect complements to the collection. The MADD team maintain a permanent collection but also organise temporary exhibitions, so check out what’s on when you visit.
