Musée d'Aquitaine, Bordeaux: All year

A museum dedicated to the region of Bordeaux and Aquitaine, it’s the perfect place to learn about local history, people and archaeology.

Constructed by the city’s architect Pierre-Charles Durand in the 19th century, it’s one of the largest French museums outside Paris. The museum has organised its collection chronologically, and has seven sections: Prehistory, Protohistory, Antiquity, Medieval period (16th and 17th centuries), Modern era, Port of Bordeaux-gateway to the world: 1800-1939 and the 20th century. If you’re a fan of the famous author and philosopher, Michel de Montaigne, you can see his tomb in the 16th century room. The building was originally built on the site of his burial, the Couvent des Feuillants. Although regional artefacts are the main stars, the Musée d’Aquitaine also includes artefacts from distant countries and tries to describe the ethnography of foreign peoples.
