La Cité du Vin, Bordeaux: All year

You can’t leave Bordeaux without visiting its wine museum. The Cité du Vin is a striking landmark as well as a tribute to the art of wine-making.

Designed by the architectural firm XTU, Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières, the Cité du Vin has 10 floors dedicated to different aspects of wine. Wine here is analysed from all angles: the science of the soil and farming, wine through the ages, Bordeaux’s wine trade and basically any aspect related to the drink. There are 19 themed areas, and they all use digital interactive exhibits. When you arrive, you are given a free multimedia guide available in eight languages that you can use to guide you through the 19 sections of the museum. After your tour you can head up to the belvedere, where you get a free glass of wine of your choice. Sip away while looking at a 360° view of the city. Besides the permanent tour, the museum also hosts temporary exhibitions.

If you’d like to wine and dine, the building has a gourmet snack bar or a restaurant with panoramic views over the city, where you can select wines from their international wine cellar. Equally, you could get some diwine souvenirs at the Cité du Vin boutique.
