Gargas Caves , Aventignan, Hautes-Pyrénées, France

Some of the oldest prehistoric pieces of art in Europe, dating between 22,000 to 28,000 years old were discovered at the foothills of the Pyrenees.

The Gargas Caves include over 200 stencilled handprints and over 140 engravings of animals, although you can only see  one group of the most complex prints to preserve the  others being quite literally scrubbed from history. The geology of the caves is also fascinating, including stalactites, stalagmites and other calcite formations.

There are daily  tours lasting 50 minutes every day in July and August; and for the rest of the year with the exception of Mondays.
