A joint presentation of the work of Claude Monet and his mentor Eugène Boudin offers an insight into their relationship and on the dawn of Impressionism.

Eugène Boudin (Honfleur, 1824 – Deauville, 1898) was a forerunner of Impressionism and one of the first French landscape painters to paint outdoors. A sailor’s son, Boudin was a marine painter and an expert in rendering summery seaside scenes. He often made the sky the point of interest in his paintings, beautifully blending colours to capture different atmospheres and lights, which gave way to his nickname the “king of the skies”.

Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 – Giverny, 1926) was a famous French painter whose name is almost synonymous to Impressionism, as it was his work which gave a name to the movement. But it wasn’t always so; Monet began his artistic career drawing caricatures in Paris. His friend Boudin, 15 years his senior, saw more potential in Monet and persuaded him to join him at the seaside, to which Monet begrudgingly agreed. Boudin introduced Monet to painting en plein air and opened his eyes to the potential that there was in landscape painting, teaching him how to capture changing light and the natural world, which later became the cornerstone of Monet’s work.

The exhibition boasts over 100 pieces of the two artist’s work alongside each other, allowing us to view their artistic careers in tandem. This joint view of their work reveals Boudin’s prolific influence on the young Monet’s style, their shared artistic interests, and the origins of the Impressionist movement.
