Amboise Castle, Montée de l'Emir Abd el Kader, Amboise, France

High above a small town of the same name on the banks of the Loire, Château d’Amboise was a royal residence between the 15th and 19th centuries.

A fort and a prison during the 17th century, it was confiscated during the revolution in 1793 after which much of the château’s finest decorations disappeared. Fireplaces, paintings, statues and woodwork were among the items lost to the turmoil.

Like many French castles, Amboise was soon restored to its former glory as early as 1811. Today, with many balconies, roofs and terraced gardens, you can get a superb view over the Loire Valley.

Perhaps its greatest claim to fame is its link with Leonardo da Vinci, who died there in 1519 and was buried in the castle’s Collegiate Church of Saint Florentin.
