The life, work and impact of the man who died for his ideals.
Francisco Ferrer i Guàrdia (1859-1909) was a Catalan educationalist and free-thinker. He pioneered the Escuela Moderna (the Modern School), an educational model based teaching the principles of rational, scientific, humanitarian and universal education. The model sought individualised attention for students and equality for men and women, with the objective of creating a free population, without prejudices or oppressors. The Escuela Moderna was very successful in Spanish schools at the start of the 20th century and caused an authentic revolution of educational and social systems across Europe.
Sadly Ferrer i Guàrdia was not able to see the success of his educational project for himself as he was executed in 1909 on account of his progressive, secular ideas which were linked to democracy, social justice and anarchism. This exhibition recaps and commemorates his objectives and principles, and the reach and repercussions of his work. It also shows, for the first time, notes and personal objects belonging to the great educational activist, bringing us closer to his private life.
Entrance to the exhibition is included in the price of the ticket for the castle.
